IB Biology SL - Unit 1 Biochemistry Scope
Follows C1.1.1-C1.1.10 of the IB Biology guide, covering carbohydrates/lipids, nucleic acids, SL proteins, and SL enzyme/metabolism content while intentionally excluding additional-HL protein structure and enzyme inhibition.
Condensation reaction
A core molecular chemistry process also referred to as dehydration synthesis.
Dehydration synthesis
An alternate term for a condensation reaction in core molecular chemistry.
Anabolic reaction
A metabolic reaction process also referred to as anabolism.
Catabolic reaction
A metabolic reaction process also referred to as catabolism.
R-group
The side chain component of an amino acid structure.
Oestradiol
A steroid lipid term, also spelled estradiol.
Control group
A scientific inquiry component also referred to as a control treatment.
Interquartile range
A scientific data metric abbreviated as IQR.
Excluded HL topics in Unit 1 Biochemistry
Additional-HL protein structure and additional-HL enzyme topics such as enzyme inhibition.
Required enzyme concepts for IB SL students
Explaining enzyme action and specificity, induced-fit binding, effects of temperature, pH, and substrate concentration using collisions and denaturation, interpreting enzyme graphs, determining reaction rates, and interpreting activation-energy diagrams.
