what is social influence
Social influence is the process by which individuals change their thoughts, feelings, or behaviors in response to the real or imagined influence of others. This includes conformity, compliance, and obedience.
what is a group and a collective and whats the main differences between them
A group is a collection of individuals who interact and share common goals, whereas a collective is a larger assembly with less interaction among members, often focused on a specific purpose or task. The main difference lies in the level of interaction and shared identity among members. a group influences those around them, a collective does not
what is status
the level of importance (real or imagined) that group members perceive regarding another group members position in that group

an individuals ability to control or strongly influence the thoughts feelings and behaviour of another person or group

a person or agency has ability to punish ie the police
what is expert power
a person or agency has specialist knowledge and skills ie An IT consultant or technician has expert power
what is informational power
a person or agency has useful information that isn’t readily available elsewhere ie a librarian
what is legitimate power
a person or agency with a formally recognised position in an organisation to exert rights over others and prescribe behaviour in others ie member of parliment
what is referent power
a person or agency has the quality of being idolised or adored as a role model ie the pope
what is reward power
a person or agency has the ability to reward behaviour positively or removing negative effects ie parents

the behaivour adopted by an individual or assigned to them that influences how they function and act in different situations
what is group think and some symptoms associated with it
when group members desire to maintain group loyalty becomes more important that making the best choices. some symptoms of group think is self censorship, collective rationalisation and belief in groups inherent morality
what is group shift
when discussion leads a group to adopt attitudes or actions that are more extreme than the initial attitudes or actions of the individual group members
what is deindividuation
when people act a certain way because of the anonymity (loss of identity) that a group provides
what is collectivist culture
culture that emphasises the needs ad goals of the group over the needs and desires of each individual
what is individualist culture
cultures that emphasis the needs and wants of individuals over the needs of a group as a whole
