Population

The complete set of people, objects, or measures having a common observable characteristics

Experimental Group(s)

The group or groups that received the experimental treatment

Variable used to label the Y-axis of your graph

The dependent variable

Random sample

Every member of the population has an equal likelihood of being chosen

Example of these include: μ and σ

Population Parameters

Dependent variable

The variable that is manipulated by the researcher

Variable used to label the X-axis of your graph

The independent variable 

Sample

A subset of the population

Examples of these include: S and x̄

Sample Statistics

Independent variable

The variable that is manipulated by the researcher

Type of sample that is not a random sample

Haphazard/Arbitrary/Convenient

Sample Statistics

A general term for numbers that describe characteristics of a sample

Control Group

The group that does not get the experimental treatment--sometimes called the placebo group

Inferential

Category of statistical procedures that use data from samples to make decisions about populations
