Nitrogen fixation
certain "nitrogen-fixing bacteria" break the triple bond in nitrogen gas, found in the soil and root nodules (legumes), add hydrogen atoms to form ammonia (NH4+)

Assimilation (of ammonia)
ammonia taken up by plants to make DNA, RNA and proteins, not all absorbed as too much is toxic
Nitrification
conversion of ammonia to nitrates so some plants can assimilate nitrates, done by nitrifying bacteria, add oxygen to ammonia, chemical reaction first converts ammonia to nitrite (NO2-) then to nitrate (NO3-), since oxygen is needed this happens best in well aerated soil

Assimilation (of nitrates)
nitrates taken up by plants that rejected ammonia assimilation, nitrogen in plants can then be passes on to other living things through food webs

Ammonification
process where all living things die and decompose, returning nitrogen to the soil as ammonia

Denitrification
done by denitrifying bacteria, which converts nitrates into nitrogen gas again, this happens best in low-oxygen environments like water logged soil, which reduces fertility in soil
