What is a compound?
A substance that consists of two or more elements chemically combined together.
Give an example of a compound and its components.
Water, which is made of hydrogen and oxygen.
What are the properties of compounds?
Compounds can only be broken down into simpler substances by chemical reactions and have different properties from their constituent elements.
What defines a mixture?
A mixture is made of two or more substances that are not chemically combined.
How can a mixture be separated?
Mixtures can be separated by physical means such as evaporation, filtration, and distillation.
What is a suspension?
A suspension is a mixture in which solid or liquid particles are suspended in a liquid or gas.
What is a solution?
A solution is a mixture where its components are evenly mixed, formed when a solute dissolves in a solvent.
What is the universal solvent?
Water.
What is a dilute solution?
A solution that contains a small amount of solute in a large volume of solvent.
What is a saturated solution?
A solution that contains the maximum amount of dissolved solute at a particular temperature.
What is a colloid?
A colloid is a mixture in which particles of one substance are dispersed in another, without dissolving or settling.
Give examples of colloids.
Paint, gelatin, milk, mayonnaise, foam.
