What does the Conservation of Energy mean?
Energy cannot be created
Energy cannot be destroyed
It can only change from one type to another (Energy is conserved - total amount stays the same)
Example of energy change: turning on a light bulb
Electrical energy →Light energy + Heat energy
What do electrical devices do?
They transform electrical energy into other forms (e.g. light, sound, heat)
Example: Television
Electrical energy →Light + Sound + Heat energy
What are thermal energy and heat energy?
The are the same thing!
What happens when a force moves an object through a distance?
Energy is transferred from one form to another
Example: A crane lifting an object
Chemical energy (in fuel) → Kinetic energy (movement) → Gravitational potential energy (lifted object)
Summary of energy transfer by force
Energy fuel → makes crane move → lifts object → increases stored gravitational energy
