8.1 Vocabulary Flashcards
Properties
The features of a material that do not depend on amount: such as color, density, flammability.
Biomimicry
Solving human problems by copying patterns found in nature.
Stalactites
Limestone deposits left by water that cling to the ceiling and grow down toward the floor.
Stalagmites
Limestone deposits left by water that grow from the floor up toward the ceiling.
Dissolving
The process of a solid being incorporated into a liquid.
Polar
A molecule with positive and negatively charged ends.
Sediments
Small particles of weathered rock carried in water.
Porous
A layer of rock with small holes that allow air or water to pass through.
Solvent
The liquid that does the dissolving.
Frost Wedging
Expanding ice forcing apart cracks in rocks.
Expand
To grow larger
Fluid
A material that is cohesive and is capable of flowing.
The concentration of a solution (Yes there鈥檚 a difference between this and 鈥渃oncentration of solution)
Describes the amount of solute dissolved in the solution.
Precipitation
Rain, snow, sleet or hail falling to earth.
Evaporation
Changing from liquid water toa gas (vapor).
PPT
A description of a solution鈥檚 concentration, parts per thousand.
Universal Solvent
Water, because it dissolves so many solutes
Solution
A well mixed mixture
Freeze
Going from liquid to solid with a loss of energy.
Solute
The substance that is being dissolved.
Humidity
The amount of water in the air.
Condense
Transitioning from water vapor to tiny drops of liquid water.
Concentrated Solution
A solution with high amounts of solute.
Delta
A fan shaped geologic feature formed by sediments as they fall out of moving water as it slows while entering a lake or the ocean
Salinity
The amount of salt in water.
