Matter
Anything that occupies space and has mass.
Mass
The amount of matter in an object.
Types of Matter Diagram
A classification diagram showing that matter is divided into pure substances (which consist of elements and compounds) and mixtures.
Pure Substance
A sample of matter with a fixed composition, where every sample has the same characteristic properties and the same composition.
Boiling Point of Pure Water
A characteristic property of pure water, which always boils at 100∘C at sea level.
Density of Pure Gold
A characteristic property of pure gold, which has a density of 19,300kgm−3.
Composition of Pure Water by Mass
An example of fixed composition showing pure water is always 11.2% hydrogen and 88.8% oxygen by mass.
Components of Matter
The basic structures that make up all matter, consisting of either atoms or molecules.
Atom
The smallest unit of an element that maintains the properties of that element.
