Theory
A set of ideas and concepts considered together that help explain certain phenomena and predict behavior and other events.
Evidence-Based Practice
A movement among social workers to use more scientific approaches, creating an increased responsibility to document that their interventions are effective.
Mezzo-Level Interventions
Approaches addressing health issues at the mezzo level, which may include assisting families to access resources such as unemployment and health benefits (such as medicaid), addressing healthcare providers' attitudes and biases towards minority groups, and addressing family access to fresh produce/preparation methods.
Systems Theory (Status Quo)
The concept that systems are always striving to maintain the status quo with regard to their functioning, whether this functioning is seen as positive or negative.
Ecosystems Theory Tenet
The belief that all human beings have the capacity for growth, change, and adaptation.
Neurotransmitters
Chemicals that can activate electrical impulses in the nervous system to control mood, drive, and daily actions; understanding their processes for sending and receiving messages is implicated in certain behavioral and mental disorders, allowing psychotropic drugs and other therapies to alter these processes.
Endocrine System
A set of glands that work in concert with the nervous system to regulate different organs and functions in our body by releasing hormones into the bloodstream; it regulates sexual development and reproduction, as well as mood, energy, and stress levels.
Medical Model Problems
Three major problems: 1. Learning of a diagnosis can create a self-fulfilling prophecy where the label leads people to believe they have no control; 2. Overemphasis on individual focus with not enough focus on environmental factors; 3. A problem-focused approach that can discourage and leave clients feeling powerless.
Bronfenbrenner's Theory Levels
The four levels of environment that impact individuals and families: Micro, Mezzo, Macro, and Chrono.
