Articulation
Occurs where two or more bones meet to form a joint.
Axial Skelton
Forms basic central structure to support the rest of bones and protect many vital organs (skulls protects brain, vertebrae protect spinal chord, ribs protect heart + lungs + kidneys)
Appendicular Skeleton
Major role is to assist with movement and consists of major limbs (arms, legs, shoulder and pelvis)
Movement
Occurs when tendons of the muscles which cross that joint exert a force on the bones resulting in movement taking place.
Origin
The attachment of the muscle to the bone that doesn’t move.
Insertion
The attachment of the muscle to the bone that moves.
Agonist
Muscle responsible for the movement.
Antagonist
The muscle that relaxes allowing movement to occur.
Extensibility
the capacity of your muscles to stretch beyond normal resting length.
Contractibility
The ability of your muscles to contract/shorten.
Excitability
The ability of your muscles to contract in response to electrical/chemical signals.
Elasticity
The ability of your muscles to return to their original position after stretching.
