Energy balance
When energy intake is equal to energy expended.
Obesogenic
An environment that promotes increased food intake, nonhealthful foods, and physical inactivity.
Body Mass Index (BMI)
A measurement that associates height and weight, and is a more comprehensive measurement of body fatness than weight alone.
Health at Every Size (HAES)
A movement that promotes improved health behaviors for people of all sizes without using weight as a mediator.
Visceral fat
Fat deposited in the abdominal cavity, which is a better predictor of disease risk than total fat mass.
Basal metabolic rate (BMR)
The amount of energy required by the body to conduct its basic functions at rest.
Total energy expenditure (TEE)
The sum of energy expended during rest, digestion, and physical activity.
Set point theory
The idea that individuals have a weight range (set point) that their body defends against changes.
Leptin
A hormone produced by fat tissue that communicates with the brain to regulate hunger and energy balance.
Eating disorders
Psychiatric illnesses that involve severe disturbances in eating behavior and body image.
Wasting diseases
Diseases that lead to weight loss and nutritional deficiencies, often requiring nutritional counseling.
Apple-shaped body
A body type characterized by higher fat storage around the waist, leading to greater health risks.
Resistance exercise
Muscle-strengthening activities designed to improve muscle mass and endurance.

Intuitive eating
