Habitat/Ecology Types

Frogs are split across:

  1. Open forests

  2. Arid areas

  3. Swamps

  4. Rainforests

Open Forests

Very dry most of the year, with a short flooding season. Tough habitat to live in but there are millions of frogs. They can survive by:

  • not being active for most of the year and mostly being active in the wet season

  • explosive breeding following rain

  • rapid tadpole development rates

Arid Areas

Most frogs are underground (aestivation). This is a type of dormancy due to water/food shortages. They can:

  • burrow underground while it is moist

  • form a water conserving cocoon

  • suppress their metabolism

  • return to mate and feed after/in heavy rainfall

  • rapid tadpole development

Swamps

Two types:

  1. Ephemeral wetlands (open forests)

  2. Permanent swamps

There aren’t that many species of frogs, but there is high endemism.

Rainforests

This is for frogs that use streams. Some live in the forest next to the stream, whereas some travel to visit the stream. Eggs are glued in rock cracks in flowing water and tadpoles live in rushing water. Terrestrial breeding can also occur.
