what was OXO towers
originally constructed as a power station to supply electricity to the Royal Mail post office. subsequently acquired by the Liebig Extract of Meat Company in the 1920s, manufacturers of Oxo beef stock cubes. It is now a set of design, arts and crafts shops on the ground and first floors with two galleries. It's use completely changed, shows the change from industrial area to a place of entertainment

The first pieces of information we have about bankside originates in 1270. Used as the hub for buying food instead of setting up on the waterside itself. Today it is still the centre of southwark's food markets. The uses of borough market haven't changed over the years, lots of continuity.

1934 - Bankside power station became controlled by the Central electricity board
1981 - Banksides power station closed due to overseas oil prices being cheaper. There is huge change from the uses of the building. From an industrial power house to a modern day art gallery. Industry to entertainment

- 1,651 bombs were dropped on bankside over the course of the war.

"The Deep" was an underground shelter beneath the borough market which provided emergency shelter to over 14,000 people after opening in 1940.

regeneration of bankside
Tourism was essential to bankside inorder to ensure the regeneration project would continue to be a success for many years. Millennium bridge and London eye also contributed to the regeneration. Urban regeneration allowed housing infrastructure to be brought up to date and modernised for the new London market.
