What is law of Fossil Succession?
fossil organisms occur in sedimentary rock layers in a predictable and recognisable sequence
What is Relative Dating?
a method of determining whether a fossil or rock is older or younger than another
What is an Index Fossil and what is its purpose?
a fossil from a species that was widespread, abundant and existed for a relatively short period of time. if index fossil is found in two different rock layers, the layer are likely to be of similar age
What is Absolute dating?
a method to determine the numerical age of a fossil or rock using radiometric dating
What is Radiometric dating?
measure the ratio of a radioactive parent isotope to its daughter product and then usinhg the half-life to calculate that age
How does carbon dating work?
living organisms contain carbon-14, after they die it decays at a known rate so the remaining carbon-14 can be measured to estimate the time since death
What is a Limitation of Carbon Dating?
carbon-14 has a relatively short half-life so it is mainly useful for relatively recent organic remains
