Instead of using a diaphragm to bring air into the lungs, birds use their chest muscles to expand and contract the thoracic cavity. This causes the bird to breathe more vigorously during flight.
A bird's lungs have air capillaries that allow air to flow straight through, unlike mammalian lungs, which have dead-end alveoli. Air travels through the lungs rather than in and out of them. This gives the avian lung a steadier oxygen supply and allows higher oxygen-transfer rates.
Mammals inhale and exhale once for each breath; however, birds inhale and exhale twice to move each breath through the respiratory system. This allows the bird to extract the maximum amount of oxygen from each breath.
Birds are designed with air sacs that store that store air during the cycle of breathing and air tubes that extend into the bones; mammals do not have these sacs and tubes. These air sacs and tubes allow bird's unique breathing patters and help cool the body by absorbing heat.
Four main differences between the avian and mammalian respiratory systems?
