Noun
A part of speech that names a person, place, thing, or idea.
Verb
A part of speech that describes an action, occurrence, or state of being.
Adjective
A part of speech that describes or modifies a noun, providing more detail about it.
Adverb
A part of speech that modifies a verb, adjective, or other adverb, often indicating time, manner, place, or degree. (Adverbs can also modify clauses, sentences, prepositional phrases, and more)
Preposition
A part of speech that shows the relationship between a noun or pronoun and other words in a sentence, often indicating direction, location, or time.
Article
A type of determiner that specifies a noun as specific or unspecific, typically classified as definite (the) or indefinite (a, an).
Pronoun
A part of speech that substitutes for a noun or noun phrase, often used to avoid repetition and provide clarity in sentences. Pronouns can include personal, possessive, reflexive, relative, and demonstrative forms.
Conjunction
A part of speech that connects words, phrases, or clauses, showing relationships between them. Conjunctions can be coordinating, subordinating, or correlative.
Coordinating conjunctions
Join words, two noun phrases, two clauses, or two adjectives of equal rank (FANBOY: For, and, nor, but, or yet, so)
Interjection
A part of speech that expresses strong emotion or sudden exclamations. Interjections can stand alone or be inserted into a sentence, often punctuated with an exclamation mark.
Phrase
A group of words that work together to convey a single idea but do not contain a subject-verb pairing.
Noun Phrase
A group of words that functions as a subject or object in a sentence, typically including a noun and its modifiers.
Adjective Phrase
A group of words that describes a noun, typically consisting of an adjective and any modifiers.
Prepositional Phrases
A group of words that begins with a preposition and includes the object of the preposition and any modifiers. Prepositional phrases can function as adjectives or adverbs in a sentence.
