Antihyperlipidemics
Medications used to treat clients with increased lipid levels in the blood, primarily by lowering low-density lipoproteins (LDLs).
Low-Density Lipoproteins (LDLs)
Often referred to as 'bad' cholesterol, these are the main type of cholesterol in the blood that can lead to heart disease if elevated.
Statins
A class of antihyperlipidemic medications that inhibit the HMG-CoA reductase enzyme to decrease cholesterol synthesis in the liver.
HMG-CoA reductase
An enzyme targeted by statin medications to reduce cholesterol production in the liver.
Common side effects of statins
Gastrointestinal symptoms such as abdominal cramps, diarrhea, constipation, flatulence, heartburn, and nausea.
Serious side effects of statins
Includes myalgia, rhabdomyolysis (muscle breakdown), hepatotoxicity, pancreatitis, renal failure, and pancytopenia.
Contraindications for statins
Pregnancy, breastfeeding, active hepatic disease, and caution in clients with a history of hepatic disease.
Metabolism of statins
Statins are metabolized in the liver by the cytochrome P450 enzyme, which can be affected by other medications.
Monitoring requirements for statin therapy
Periodic testing of hepatic function, CK levels, and lipid profile; monitoring for side effects and therapeutic effects.
Lifestyle modifications for cardiovascular health
Smoking cessation, weight control, physical activity, and a diet high in complex carbohydrates and low in saturated fats.
Patient education on statins
Instruct about the importance of adherence to medication, avoiding grapefruit, recognizing and reporting serious side effects.
Familial hypercholesterolemia
A genetic disorder that results in high cholesterol levels, often requiring aggressive management with statins.
Pregnancy test before statin therapy
Required for clients assigned female at birth of childbearing age to ensure safety before starting statins.
Signs of myopathy and rhabdomyolysis
Include unexplained muscle pain or weakness, brown urine, indicating potential severe side effects requiring immediate attention.
Symptoms of liver impairment
Fatigue, anorexia, nausea, dark urine, or yellowing of the eyes or skin, which should prompt immediate medical consultation.
Cholesterol-lowering effect of statins
Facilitates the uptake of LDLs and VLDLs, leading to overall decreased lipid levels in the blood.
Atorvastatin
A commonly prescribed statin for managing high cholesterol levels and reducing cardiovascular risks.
