What role does an orthodontic assistant play in a dental office?
An orthodontic assistant is there to support the orthodontist and help make sure the patient has a good experience. We help the doctor during appointments, prepare the patient, keep everything clean and organized, and make sure the patient feels comfortable and understands what’s going on. I think being friendly, dependable, and a good team member is a big part of the job.
Tell us about any previous experience you have in this field?
I actually started my Dental Assisting program at Clackamas Community College in September of 2025 and graduated in June of 2026 on the Honor Roll. During my program, I got hands-on experience pretty early on. Around week eight, I started interning at a general dental office, where I was able to get comfortable working with patients and assisting with different procedures.
During my third and final term, I also had the opportunity to intern at an orthodontic office for about six weeks. That experience really helped me become interested in orthodontics. I got to learn things like placing and removing wires, using the iTero scanner, taking X-rays, and assisting with different parts of orthodontic treatment. Since I’m still early in my career, I’m excited to keep learning and build on the experience I already have.
What techniques do you use to manage your time effectively?
“I try to stay organized and prioritize what needs to be done first. I like to make a mental or written list of my tasks so I know what I need to focus on. I also try to stay a step ahead, especially in a busy office, by preparing what I can before the next patient comes in. At the same time, I understand that things can change, so I stay flexible and adjust my priorities when needed.”
How would you handle a difficult patient?
“I would try to stay calm, patient, and understanding. I think sometimes a patient may be frustrated because they’re nervous, uncomfortable, or don’t fully understand what’s happening. I would listen to their concerns, speak to them respectfully, and try to make them feel heard. If it was something I couldn’t handle on my own, I would ask the orthodontist or another team member for help. My goal would be to make the patient feel comfortable while still handling the situation professionally.”
How do you explain Orthodontic procedures to patients?
“I like to explain things in a simple, easy-to-understand way and avoid using too many technical terms. I would walk the patient through what we’re doing and what they can expect. I also think it’s important to check in with them, especially if they seem nervous, and let them know they can ask questions. I want the patient to leave feeling comfortable and knowing what happened during their appointment.”
What are the administrative tasks you've handled?
“I’ve mainly worked with patient records, keeping them accurate and organized. I also had some practice with billing and insurance during school. I’m still learning in that area, but I’m a quick learner and would be happy to build more experience with it.”
How do you assist the orthodontist during a treatment?
“I see it as being a good step ahead of the orthodontist. I make sure the room and instruments are ready, assist during treatment, and pay attention to what the doctor needs.
How do you protect patients and yourself from potential hazards?
“I make sure to follow proper safety and infection-control procedures at all times. That includes wearing the appropriate PPE, washing and sanitizing my hands, properly disinfecting surfaces and instruments, and handling sharps and other materials carefully. I also make sure to follow the office’s safety guidelines and ask questions if I’m ever unsure about something
How do you handle pressure at work?
“I try to stay calm and focused when things get busy. I usually prioritize what needs to be done first and take things one step at a time instead of getting overwhelmed. I also think communication is important, so if I’m unsure about something or need help, I’m comfortable asking. I’ve learned through school and my internships that staying organized and keeping a positive attitude helps me work well under pressure.”
Why are you interested in this position?
“I’m interested in this position because during my orthodontic internship, I really enjoyed the environment and the people I worked with. I liked that everyone had their own responsibilities and could work independently, but there was still a strong emphasis on teamwork and helping each other when needed. I also really enjoyed getting to know the patients. Since you see them regularly throughout their treatment, you get to build more of a relationship with them and actually see their progress. That was something I really liked, and it made me realize that orthodontics is an area I’d like to continue in.”
“Tell us about yourself”
“I recently graduated from the Dental Assisting program at Clackamas Community College, where I was on the Honor Roll. I had the chance to get experience in both general dentistry and orthodontics during school, and I found that I really enjoyed orthodontics. I liked the environment, getting to know the team, and having the opportunity to build relationships with patients since you see them regularly.
I’m someone who likes to stay busy, learn new things, and be helpful wherever I’m needed. I’m still early in my career, so I’m definitely looking forward to learning from an experienced team and continuing to grow as an assistant.”
How do you handle multitasking in a fast-paced environment?
“I stay organized and focus on what needs to be done first. I try to stay a step ahead while also being flexible when things change.”
Have you ever used orthodontic practice software? If yes, which ones?
How would you resolve a conflict with a coworker
“I would talk to them directly and respectfully and try to understand their perspective. I think good communication is usually the best way to resolve a conflict before it becomes a bigger issue.”
How do you facilitate teamwork in your daily tasks?
“I communicate with the team, help out when I can, and make sure I’m staying on top of my own responsibilities. I think being dependable and willing to help makes a big difference in a team.”
If a patient is nervous or scared, how do you reassure them?
“I would stay calm, listen to their concerns, and explain what we’re doing in a simple way. I’d also let them know they can ask questions and take things one step at a time.”
What are your professional development goals in the next five years?
“My goal is to become a confident and well-rounded orthodontic assistant. I want to keep learning, improve my skills, and eventually take on more responsibility as I gain experience.”
