The French and Indian War
1750-1760’s, Britain and American colonies fought France and American allies over control of NA. Britain won and obtained massive debt. Britain’s war debt led to Parliament taxing the colonies increasing colonial resentment. This increased tension led to the American revolution.
Albany Plan of Union
1754, proposed by Benjamin Franklin during the French and Indian War, discussed the colonies joining together under a central government. Early attempt of a unified government and colonial unity.
The Proclamation line of 1763
Britain kept colonists from settling west of the Appalachian mountains meant to settle conflicts with Native Americans after the French and Indian War. Made colonists mad because they wanted to expand westward, increased colonial resentment towards british control and regulations.
Stamp Act Congress
1765, 9 colonies met to oppose the Stamp Act and argued colonists should not be taxed by Parliament. Demonstrated organized colonial cooperation against British policies and no taxation without representation which was important to revolutionary resistance.
Common Sense
1776; emphasizing that the colonists should become independent from Britain, argued that people should govern themselves. Persuaded colonists to support independence and the shift from resistance to complete seperation.
The Battle of Yorktown
1781- american and french cornered British army at Yorktown. General surrendered ending the major fighting of the American Revolution. British defeat led to negotiations and secured American independence.
