Transient Synovitis of Hip AKA Toxic Synovitis
Inflammation of Hip Joint
Etiology unclear: Follows upper respiratory infection, trauma, bacterial infection, and postvaccine or drug-mediated reactions cited as causes
Epidemiology: Predominant sex is males approx 4:1 ratio. Most common cause of acute hip pain in children ages 3-10 years old
Symptoms: Abrupt onset of hip pain, thigh pain, groin pain, knee pain, afebrile or low grade fever, walk with limp, decreased range of motion (abduction)
Lab studies: Do not have elevation of serum white blood cell count (WBC), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), and C-reactive protein (CRP)
