Ascension
The event that marks the definitive entrance of Jesus' humanity into God's heavenly domain (CCC, 665), occurring 40 days after Easter Sunday.
Pentecost
From the Greek for 'fiftieth day,' a Jewish harvest feast occurring 50 days after Passover when the Holy Spirit appeared to the Apostles in wind and fire; considered the birthday of the Church.
Apostolic Succession
The handing on of the teaching, preaching, and office of the Apostles to their successors, the bishops, through the laying on of hands.
Evangelical Counsels
Vows of personal poverty, chastity (understood as lifelong celibacy), and obedience to a bishop or superior of a religious community.
Charism
A special gift or grace of the Holy Spirit that directly or indirectly builds up the Church, helps a person live a Christian life, or serves the common good.
Messiah
From the Hebrew for 'the Chosen One' or the 'Anointed One'; the role that Jesus filled.
Assumption of Mary
A feast celebrated in the Church on August 15.
Canon
The inspired books of the Bible, which in the Catholic Bible includes 46 books in the Old Testament and 27 in the New Testament.
Heresies
Teachings that go against the Church.
People of the Way
The title given to early followers of Jesus who considered their belief an extension of Judaism rather than a new religion.
Antioch
The place where the term 'Christian' was first used.
Gentile
A non-Jewish person.
Monotheism
The belief in one God.
Council of Jerusalem
The first Church Council, held in Jerusalem, which determined that Gentile converts could join the Church without first becoming Jewish, being circumcised, or following Jewish customs and traditions.
Saul
A Pharisee and Roman citizen who regularly persecuted followers of Jesus Christ before undergoing a radical conversion on the road to Damascus.
Apostle to the Gentiles
The title given to Paul because he turned to preaching and teaching to non-Jewish people after his conversion, more than doubling the size of Christianity.
One of the sacraments of initiation in which a baptized person receives the Holy Spirit, strengthening their faith.
