Direct compression

This refers to when powder particles are compressed directly into tablets

Granule compression

This refers to when powder particles are formulated into granules prior to compression

Dry granulation

This uses pressure and binders to compress tablets

Wet granulation

This uses binder-containing solvents to compress tablets

Granulation

This is the process by which powder particles are made to adhere and form larger particles

Slugging

This is the formation of ‘slugs',’ or large tablets produced in a heavy-duty press

Traditional planetary mixer

This is a mixer in which dry powder is blended separately before wet granulation

High-shear granulator

This uses a main blade at 150-300rpm and a chopper at 1500-3000 rpm to granulate product

Single-punch tablet press

This consists of one punch pair, one die, and a fixed die table. Lower punch position determines tablet weight and upper punch position determines tablet hardness, used for small-scale production

Rotary tablet press

This consists of multiple upper and lower punches and dies set into a rotating die table, with punches set in tracks above and below. Used for large-scale production

Powder compression

This refers to the reduction of volume of a powder via force application

Powder compaction

This refers to the formation of a solid specimen by powder compression
