Active Fire Protection
A category of fire protection that includes systems like automatic sprinklers.
Noncombustible Paint Thickness
A material is still considered noncombustible if its core is noncombustible and the paint thickness does not exceed $1/8"$.
Smoke Inhalation
The primary cause of death in fire-related incidents.
Fire Retardant Treated (FRT) Wood
A type of wood that is still classified as combustible despite its treatment.
ASTM E119
A standard test that evaluates structural integrity, fire and smoke tightness, and the temperature of the unexposed face.
Type V(B) Construction
The type of construction most commonly used for single-family dwellings in the US.
Noncombustible Construction Types
Type I and Type II construction.
Combustible Construction Types
Type III, Type IV, and Type V construction.
Flame Spread Index (FSI)
A measure that should not exceed 450 for safety.
Smoke Developed Index (SDI)
A measure that should not exceed 450 for safety.
Class A Interior Finish
The type of interior finish required for exit stairs.
Class B Interior Finish
The type of interior finish required for corridors.
Class C Interior Finish
The type of interior finish found in rooms.
Audible Sound Frequency Range
20Hz to 20kHz.
Sound Transmission Class (STC)
A measure of the sound-insulating property of a material with respect to airborne sound.
Minimum STC for Party Walls
A value of 50, as required by building codes.
Resilient Channel
A small light-gauge steel member with a rubber pad fastened to it, used for sound insulation.
Impact Insulation Class (IIC)
A measure of sound-insulating property for structure-borne sound, with a minimum code requirement of 50 for floor-ceiling assemblies.
Separation Joints
Joints provided in large buildings at intervals of about 200ft.
Creep
The name for time-dependent permanent deflection in materials like concrete.
Concrete Control Joints
Joints used specifically to accommodate moisture loss and shrinkage in concrete.
Clay Masonry Expansion Joints
Joints used specifically to accommodate moisture absorption and expansion in clay masonry.
Spandrel Beam
The horizontal element that runs on the outside edge of a floor or roof.
Backer Rod Diameter
Must be greater than the width of the joint.

Lumber with a moisture content of 20% or greater (Green lumber).

A unit of volume unique to lumber.

Short for 'surfaced on 4 sides'.

Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL)
A manufactured wood product with a moisture content typically below 8%.
I-Joist Composition
A wood member where the flanges are typically LVL and the webs are OSB.
Clapboards
Another name for beveled wood sidings.
Type X Gypsum Wallboard
The type of GWB known for its fire-resistive properties.
Tertiary Steel Component
Structural elements such as steel deck.
Snug-Tight Connection
A connection also known as a bearing connection.
Moment Connection
The name for a rigid connection in steel framing.
Simple Connection
A connection also known as a shear connection or AISC Type II connection.
Butt Plate
An element used between two spliced columns when they differ significantly in dimensions.

A CMU unit used to avoid sharp corners.
Lintel Unit
A unit used to span over an opening in a CMU wall.
Capillary Break Width
A gap that should be at least 1/4" wide to prevent water movement.
Weep Holes
Small openings at the bottom of cladding designed to allow water to escape.
