Hypervisors

Special software that creates the virtual hardware for devices in virtualization.

Hypervisor

An instance of virtual hardware created by a hypervisor, which can run a guest operating system.

Virtual machine (VM)

The operating system installed within a virtual machine, separate from the host operating system.

Guest OS

The underlying operating system of the physical computer, separate from the guest operating system.

Host OS

Bare-metal hypervisors that are installed as an operating system on a dedicated bare metal server.

Type 1 Hypervisors

Hosted hypervisors that are installed as an application on personal computers or laptops.

Type 2 Hypervisors

The decrease in performance experienced by Type 2 hypervisors due to competing for hardware resources with other applications and having to send hardware requests through the computer's operating system.

Performance Penalty

A virtual network card installed within a virtual machine to provide network access.

Virtual Network Adapter

The ability of hypervisors to keep each virtual machine and its virtual hardware isolated and independent from other virtual machines.

Isolation

A web-based interface used to access and manage a Type 1 hypervisor and the virtual machines running on it.
