archimede’ principle

buoyant force acting on a body immersed in a fluid equal to the weight of the fluid displaced by the body, and the buoyant force acts upward through the centroid of the displaced

vertical stability

a floating objects tendency to return to its original upright position after being tilted

roational stability

an objects ability to return to its original position after a small rotation

center of gravity (G)

point where the entire weight of a body may be considered to be concentrated, and the force of gravity on the object is taken to actven

center of buoyancy (B)

the point where the upward bouyant force acts on a submerged or floating objec

Restorative moment

rotational force (torque) that acts to return a body to it’s original, stable equilibrium position after its been disturbed

Metacenter (M)

theoretical point where a vertical line through the center of buoyancy of a floating body intersects with a vertical line through the body’s center of gravity when it is tilted

Metacentric heigh (GM)

measure of a floating object’s initial stability, distance between center of gravity and metacenter
