Lab experiments
It is an experiment = takes place in controlled, artificial environment within which the researcher manipulates IV and records effects on DV while controlling extraneous variables
Strengths of Lab experiments
N: High control over extraneous variables = ensure that effect on dependent variable is result of manipulation of independent variable.
E: More certain about showing cause and effect relationship between IV and DV giving results high internal validity
N: Replication more possible than other types of experiments = high level of control and standardised procedures
E: Replication = vital to check results of any study to see whether findings are internally valid and not just one-off
Weaknesses of Lab experiments
N: lack ecological validity = lab environment artificial and not like everyday life. Tasks participants are asked to carry out in a lab experiment may not represent real-life experience
E: Results can’t be generalised beyond the research setting.
N: Participants are aware they are being tested in a lab expt. = prevent participants from acting naturally due to demand characteristics
E: Reduce internal validity of findings = reducing ability to show cause and effect relationship between IV and DV
Field experiments
Take place in a natural setting where researcher manipulates IV and records effect on the DV. Setting is usually natural environment of the participant.
Strengths of Field Experiment
N: High ecological validity = because environment more natural
