Overheating

The compact design of mobile devices makes them vulnerable to _____

  • This often happens on the bottom surface of a laptop when improperly ventilated

  • Happens when laptops are put on

    • soft surfaces,

    • on people's laps, or

    • in places where there is not enough room between the vents and a wall

Laptop Cooling/Chiller Pads

Accessories designed to sit under the laptop to:

  • Protect a user from getting a burn from a device overheating

  • Maximize airflow

New cards
3
  • Dust

    • Acts as an insulator and can prevent proper cooling

  • Intensive use

  • High screen brightness

  • Flashlight function

  • Direct sunlight exposure

Things that can cause a mobile device to overheat

New cards
4
  • Protective circuitry

    • Initiates a shut down if the internal temperature is at the maximum safe limit

  • Monitoring apps

    • Can monitor battery temperature and then compare that to the operating limits

Tools to protect a mobile phone from overheating

  • Generally, approaching 40⁰C is getting too warm

True

  • Waterproofing is rated on the Ingress Protection (IP) scale

True or False: Some mobile-device cases provide a degree of waterproofing

6

Ingress Protection (IP) scale

A rating system used to evaluate waterproofing

  • A case or device will have two numbers, such as IP67

    • First number — Rating for repelling solids

      • 5/6 = Dust protected/dust proof

    • Second number — Rating for repelling liquids

      • 7/8 = Immersion up to 1m/Immersion beyond 1m

  • If dust protection is unrated, the IP value will be IPX7 or IPX8

New cards
7
  • Visible signs of water under the screen

  • Screen might display graphics artifacts or not show an image

Symptoms of liquid damage

New cards
8
  • Turn the power off immediately

  • Dry as much excess liquid as possible

  • If you think internal components are wet, the device must be disassembled to fully dry

    • Once dry, clean the circuit boards and contacts

    • Battery will usually need to be replaced

What to do if you suspect liquid damage to a phone

New cards
9
  • Connector may be loose or may no longer fit

  • May be no data connection at all, or it might be intermittent

  • Device may fail to charge properly

Damaged Port Symptoms

  • Commonly caused by improper insertion and removal of connectors

    • Remove a connector by holding the connector and pulling it straight.

    • A connector should not be jiggled to remove it
