Nasopharynx
Passage for air, filters and humidifies inhaled air.
Oropharynx
Passage for air, food, and liquids; helps in swallowing.
Laryngopharynx
Passage for air and food, leads to the larynx and esophagus.
Glottis
Controls airflow to the lungs; involved in sound production.
Epiglottis
Covers the trachea during swallowing to prevent food from entering the lungs.
Vocal cords
Produce sound when air passes through them.
Thoracic Cavity
Contains and protects the lungs, heart, and other structures.
Parietal pleura
Lines the thoracic cavity; protects lungs and provides lubrication.
Visceral pleura
Covers the lungs; provides lubrication to reduce friction during breathing.
Larynx
Produces sound, protects the trachea during swallowing, regulates airflow.
Thyroid Cartilage
Provides structure and protection for the vocal cords.
Cricoid Cartilage
Provides support and structure to the larynx and trachea.
Trachea
Air passage between the larynx and lungs.
Esophagus
Transports food and liquids from the mouth to the stomach.
Apex
Facilitates gas exchange and provides lung expansion.
Right superior lobe
Facilitates gas exchange in the right lung.
Right middle lobe
Facilitates gas exchange in the right lung.
Right inferior lobe
Facilitates gas exchange in the right lung.
Diaphragm
Primary muscle for breathing; helps expand and contract the lungs.
Left superior lobe
Facilitates gas exchange in the left lung.
Left inferior lobe
Facilitates gas exchange in the left lung.
Principal bronchi
Main passageways for air to enter each lung.
Bronchioles
Carry air to the alveoli, where gas exchange occurs.
Alveoli
Site of gas exchange (oxygen and carbon dioxide) in the lungs.
