What is meant by tissue?
ā¢ A tissue is a group of similar cells that carry out the same Functions
Dermal tissue (Epidermis)
Location: Found covering leaves stems and roots
Function: Protect the plants
Adaption: Have a thickened cell wall
Vascular tissue
Function of Xylem:
ā¢ Transports water and minerals through the plant
ā¢ Provide support
Function of phloem:
ā¢ Transfer food from the leaf to other parts of the plant such as a the root
ā¢ adaption: Contains a companion cell which contains many mitochondria (Provide energy for transporting food-Sugars)
Nervous tissue
ā¢ Compose of nerve cells called neurons
ā¢ Function: Neuronās carry electrical impulses to and from brain and spinal cord
ā¢ Adaption: Myelin sheath Helps insulate the movement of the electrical impulse
Muscle tissue
Function: Allows movement by contracting and relaxing
Adaption: By their cells having large amounts of mitochondria To provide the necessary energy required
Example: Skeletal muscle(Biceps/Triceps)
What is meant by tissue culture?
ā¢ Tissue culture is a growth of cells an sterile nutrient medium outside and organism
Note: Sterile refers to an environment free of microorganisms
Note: A nutrient medium provides food, allowing the cells to grow
In vitro growth
ā¢ Growth of cells outside the body in an artificial Environment
Vivo growth
ā¢ growth of cells inside the body
Factors that allow successful tissue culture
ā¢ Correct nutrients(Glucose)
ā¢ Vitamins and minerals
ā¢ Oxygen supply
ā¢ Suitable temperature\ PH
ā¢ Sterile environment
ā¢ Hormones\ Growth regulators
Facts on skin graphs
ā¢ Used to grow new skin for a bad skin burns
Benefits of skin grafts
ā¢ New skin will not be rejected by persons body as it is identical to patient skin
ā¢ A skin can be grown there is no need to remove it from other parts of body
