Chromatin
DNA form found in the cell during times of non-division.
Centrioles
Organize the microtubules during cellular division, form the base for cilia and flagella.
Cytoskeleton
Aid in maintaining cell shape, involved in intracellular and cellular movement; also part of the centrioles.
Golgi Apparatus
Packages, modifies, and separates proteins for secretion from the cell.
Intermediate Filaments
Found in the nuclear envelope; help maintain shape.
Lysosomes
Contains low pH and enzymes that facilitate intracellular digestion.
Microfilaments
Involved in muscle contraction. Composed of actin.
Microtubules
Responsible for maintaining cell shape, vesicular transport, and cell movement.
Mitochondria
Site of ATP synthesis in the presence of oxygen, contains its own DNA and ribosomes.
Nuclear Envelope
Double membrane that surrounds the nucleus; contains pores for transport into and out of the nucleus.
Nucleolus
Site of synthesis of ribosome components.
Nucleus
Houses the DNA; involved in providing information to make proteins; considered to be the 'control center' of the cell.
Peroxisomes
Contains enzymes that remove toxic chemicals (i.e. hydrogen peroxide) from the cell.
Plasma Membrane
Cell's external barrier; provides selective transport and cell-cell recognition, participates in signal transduction.
Ribosomes
Considered to be both a protein and organelle. Involved in making a protein based on information stored in mRNA.
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum
Responsible for assisting with folding and modification of proteins destined for secretion or insertion into the plasma membrane.
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum
Site of lipid synthesis, steroid hormones synthesis, and drug detoxification.
Vesicles
Double-membraned packages that bring cellular material from one location to another in the cell. Involved in intracellular membrane trafficking.
