Vocabulary terms covering the administrative hierarchy, academic colleges, and specific details of the Medical and Dental schools at the University of Ghana.

University of Ghana

Ghana's largest and oldest public university, founded in 1948.

Chancellor

The ceremonial head of the University; the current holder is Dr. Mrs. Mary Chinery-Hesse.

Chairperson of the University Council

The individual who heads the University's governing body; currently Ms. Marietta Agyeiwaa Brew.

Vice-Chancellor

The Chief Executive and chief academic/administrative officer of the University; currently Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo.

Pro Vice-Chancellors

Individuals who deputise the Vice-Chancellor in specific portfolios; currently Prof. Gordon Akanzuwine Awandare and Prof. Felix Ankomah Asante.

Registrar

The chief administrative officer responsible for the University's administration.

Provost

The title given to the individual who heads each College within the University.

Dean

The title given to the individual who heads Schools and Faculties.

Heads of Department (HoDs)

The individuals who lead individual academic departments.

University of Ghana Colleges

The four colleges are: College of Health Sciences, College of Humanities, College of Basic and Applied Sciences, and College of Education.

College of Health Sciences (CHS) Provost

The current head of the College of Health Sciences is Prof. Alfred Edwin Yawson.

To produce highly qualified and competent health professionals and medical scientists to provide promotive, preventive and curative services through teaching, research and knowledge dissemination.

University of Ghana Medical School (UGMS)

The medical training arm of the University established in 1962, and one of the oldest medical schools in West Africa.

MBChB

Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery; a standard entry route for high school graduates spanning 6 academic years.

GEMP

Graduate Entry Medical Programme; a faster-track medical program lasting approximately 5 years for students with a science-related first degree.

UGMS Dean

The current Dean of the University of Ghana Medical School is Prof. Yvonne Dei-Adomakoh.

University of Ghana Dental School (UGDS)

Ghana's premier institution for training dentists, which became a school in 1991 and attained faculty status in the 1999/2000 academic year.

BDS

Bachelor of Dental Surgery; a six-year flagship degree where students earn a BSc (Medical Sciences) before specialized dental training.

GEDP

Graduate Entry Dental Programme; a pathway offered by the Dental School for eligible science graduates.

UGDS Dean

The current Dean of the University of Ghana Dental School is Prof. Sandra Ama Hewlett.

Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR)

A research institute under the College of Health Sciences.
