Anterior (Ventral)
Front (belly side) of the body.
Posterior (Dorsal)
Back or rear side of the body.
Superior (Cranial)
Above; toward the head.
Inferior (Caudal)
Below; toward the feet.
Proximal
Closer to the point of origin or trunk of the body.
Distal
Farther from the point of origin or trunk.
Medial
Toward the midline of the body.
Lateral
Away from the midline of the body.
Superficial
Closer to the surface of the body.
Deep
Farther from the surface; toward the interior.
Visceral
Internal organs.
Parietal
Outer layer of a membrane that lines a body cavity.
Ipsilateral
On the same side of the body.
Contralateral
Opposite side of the body.
