One Health Approach
Recognizes that the health of the people are closely connected to the health of animals and our shared environment. - CDC
Examples of One Health Approach
Animals: Vaccinating animals for rabies will protect human health
Environment: The soil quality affecting crop growth.
The Epidemologic Triad
The interactions between the susceptible host (the person) the agent which causes the harm (agent/contaminant) and environment which brings the two together.
Example of The Epidemologic Triad
Malaria
Agent: parasite that will CAUSE the malaria
Environment: The AREA which supports mosquitos that carry the parasite.
Host: Person who becomes affected by malaria.
Examples of Epidemologic Triad (Chemical Exposure)
Agent: the chemical a person is exposed too
Environment: The contaminated environment that contains the chemical
Host: The person exposed to the chemical

Sources of Environmental Chemical Contamination
Can be natural: not caused by humans, such as:
volcanoes
soil deposits
natural seepage
fires
Can also be anthropogenic (caused by humans):
most of pollution
Examples of Chemical Contaminants in Air
SO2 (Sulfur Dioxide)
VOCS (Volatile Organic Compounds)
Nitrogen Oxides (NOx)
Ozone (O3)
Carbon Monoxide (CO)
Lead (Pb)
PM
Examples of Chemical Contaminants in Water
Chemical Contaminants:
Inorganic contaminants: As,Pb,Hg
Organic contaminants: (contains carbon)
Waterborne Illness
Protozoan parasite: Cryptosporidium
Hepatitis A
Cholera
Bioaccumulation
The accumulation of a toxic chemical in the tissue of a particular organism
Biomagnification
Special type of bioaccumulation that occurs through a food chain, results in a dramatically increasing concentrations of a toxic chemical in the bodies of animals as you go up a food chain.

Human Impact: The Biomagnification of Mercury
Mercury Increases Up the Food Chain

Choices to Avoid Concerning Mercury
King Mackerel
Marlin
Orange Roughy
Shark
Swordfish
Tilefish (Gulf of Mexico)
Tuna, bigeye
What are two frameworks that demonstrate that the health of animals and enviorment can impact human health?
One Health and Epidemiologic Triad
