Indicator
A substance that contains a dye that changes color in acidic and alkaline solutions.
Litmus paper
A type of indicator that turns pink in acid and blue in alkali.

Base
A compound that reacts with an acid to form a neutral solution.
Alkalis
Bases that are soluble in water.

Acids and Alkalis
Solutions that are chemical opposites; one has a pH less than 7 (acid) and the other has a pH greater than 7 (alkaline).
Neutral
The state of a solution that is neither acidic nor alkaline, with a pH of 7.
Corrosive
The ability to cause burns or damage upon contact with skin or other materials.
Concentrated
A solution with a high concentration of acid or alkali particles relative to the amount of water.
Dilute
A solution with a small number of acid or alkali particles in the same amount of water.
pH Scale
A scale used to measure how acidic or alkaline a substance is.
