Prescriptive Code

A code that provides specific requirements that have to be met for design, construction, and maintenance of a project. This is focused on specific solutions to achieve a goal based on historical experience and engineering.

Performance Code

A code that describes an objective, but does not give specific instructions on how to achieve the objective. This allows for more than a single solution to be provided, which can be achieved by meeting the criteria established by the code. Any alternative products and/or materials must meet the required standard regarding safety, durability, etc.

International Plumbing Code

The first I-Code published by the ICC that is revised every three years and is the most widely used plumbing code. Is in use/adopted by 35 states. Gives minimum number of toilets, lavatories, drinking fountains, and other fixtures required in a building.

Life Safety Code

Also known as the NFPA 101, it is not a building code. Instead, it focuses on problems involving evacutation of occupants from a building. It has minimum requirements in regard of design, construction, etc. to protect occupants from fire hazards, smoke, and toxic fumes.

National Electric Code

One of the oldest codes that is also known as the NFPA 70. It is the most widely used electrical code and serves as the basis for most jurisdictions' electrical codes. The benchmark for safe electrical design, installation, and inspection to protect people and property from electrical hazards.

International Energy Conservation Code

This addresses energy efficiency in multiple ways: through cost, use of energy, use of natural resources, and environmental impact of the energy usage for both commerical and residential designs. Most of the U.S. states require the use of this code.

International Fire Code

The fire code produced by the ICC that is revised every 3 years. This comprehensive fire code establishes minimum regulations for fire prevention and fire protection systems using prescriptive and performance-related provisions. It is founded on broad-based principles that make possible the use of new materials and new system designs.
