First strength
Real-world application. Increased understanding of neurochemical processes in the brain is associated with the use of psychoactive drugs to treat serious mental disorders. People with depression can manage their condition
Second strength
Use scientific methods in investigations. To investigate the basis of behaviour, the approach uses a range of precise and highly objective methods. Much of the approach is based on reliable data
First limitation
Offers casual conclusions. Offers explanations for mental illness in terms of the action of neurotransmitters in the brain. Evidence from studies, shows that a drug reduces the symptoms of a mental disorders. The approach is claiming to have discovered causes where only association exists
Second limitation
Determinist (don’t believe in free will). Sees human behaviour as controlled by genetic causes, we have no control over. Suggests that the biological view is often too simplistic and ignores the mediating effects of the environment
