Atom
The smallest particle of an element that retains the properties of said element.
Matter
substance that has both mass and volume, typically classified as solid, liquid, or gas
Two categories/c;assifications of matter
Pure substances
Mixtures
Element
A substance that can not be broken down into simpler substances and is only composed of ONE atom type
Compound
two or more elements chemically bonded (cannot be separated using physical methods) together in a fixed ratio.
Mixtures
Mixtures are composed of two or more elements or compounds in no fixed ratio
Mixtures contain pure substances that are not chemically bonded so they can be separated by physical methods
Two types of mixtures
Homogenous
heterogenous
Homogenous mixtures
A type of a mixture that a uniform composition and no visible phases or boundaries
Heterogenous mixtures
A type of mixture with a non-uniform composition with visible phases or boundaries
Solvent
A substance, usually a liquid in which other substances are able to dissolve (essentially anything liquid)
Solute
A substance that is dissolved ina solvent to form a solution
Solution
a type of homogeneous mixture composed of a solute dissolved in water, the solvent.
Aqueous Solution
A type of homogenous micture composed of a solute dissolved in water, the solvent. (Aqueous = WATER IS THE LIQUID)
