Jerry: Stand back, children. Wait for the firemen.

Mrs. O’Briant: (MRS. O’BRIANT rushes in) Some of the kids are missing!

2
New cards

Jerry: They’re ‘round here somewhere

Mrs. O’Briant: They’re missing. They were - (holds up hand for quiet. There’s the cry of several terrified CHILDREN heard just above the sound of the fire.) They’re IN THE CHURCH!

3
New cards

Johnny: There ain’t time (rushes off stage R.)

Mrs. O’Briant: (a prayer) God, help us. (MRS. O’BRIANT and JERRY exit in the direction of the fire)

4
New cards

(Light comes up on DC revealing PONYBOY, laid out on a stretcher, if possible one that’s raised up and on wheels. The man from the church fire, JERRY, is sitting beside PONYBOY, and the woman from that event, MRS. O’BRIANT, is holding onto the side of the stretcher and gently sponging PONYBOY’S face) ***Turo will look like he is going to wake up, then say your line***

Mrs. O’Briant: I think he’s coming around!

5
New cards

Jerry: They’re in the ambulance right behind us.

Mrs. O’Briant: Just calm down. You’re going to be okay. You just passed out.

6
New cards

Ponyboy: (grimly) Are you takin’ us to the police station?

Mrs. O’Briant: (startled) The police station?

7
New cards

Jerry: Dallas will be all right. He burned one arm trying to drag the other kid out the window. Johnny - (He takes a breath) I don’t know about Johnny. A piece of timber caught him across the back-he might have a broken back.

Mrs. O’Briant: He has severe burns. Severe. (PONYBOY has to sit up at this, horrified.) They’re giving him plasma now.

8
New cards

Jerry: Better lie back. It’s better if you - (Overwhelmed by it all.) I swear, you three are the bravest kids I’ve ever seen. (Trying to put it lightly.) Are you professional heros or something?

Mrs. O’Briant: (Deeply moved) I think you were sent straight from Heaven.

9
New cards

Ponyboy: Are the little kids okay?

Mrs. O’Briant: They’re okay - Thank you. (The light is dimming off on them.) A lot of parents want to thank you. (As the light, the red flasher and the vehicle sounds fade off, a VOICE is heard calling over the hospital public address)
