Decision to have a baby
The process of determining readiness to have a child and the responsibilities involved in shaping a child's attitudes and behaviors over time.
Effective Discipline
Discipline methods that promote growth, enhance self-concept, and help children become accountable and understand rules and expectations.
Fix up
A discipline technique where a child is expected to fix a situation they caused trouble or harm in, such as helping to fix a broken toy.
Ignore attention-seeking misbehavior
A discipline strategy where attention-seeking misbehavior is ignored to discourage its continuation.
Be firm
Speaking in a serious tone to let a child know that their behavior is being taken seriously, without resorting to yelling.
Stay in control
Maintaining emotional balance and acting before a situation escalates out of control.
Communication in the family
The important role of communication in setting boundaries, overcoming challenges, and maintaining healthy relationships within the family.
One-way communication
Communication where one person is talking or sending messages without receiving any response.
Two-way communication
Communication that involves both giving and receiving information, allowing for feedback and interaction.
Types of parenting styles
Permissive, democratic, authoritarian, jellyfish, and backbone parenting styles, each with their own advantages, disadvantages, and ways of responding to different situations.
Permissive
- let kids do whatever with no boundaries, consequences are up to kids.
democratic
- based on respect for both child & parent,
Authoritarian(brick wall)
- too many rules, strict. Are inflexible and controlling
Authoritative(back bone):
mix of permissive and authoritarian. Rules and boundaries

Anything goes, and limits to acceptable behaviour r not clear
Backbone
flexibility mizes w limits. Child develops a sense of right and wrong and enables kids to to think for themselves.
Parenting Skills
Skills such as understanding, good decision-making, setting boundaries, being a good role model, behavior management, consistency, dedicating time to children, discipline, flexibility, honesty, and love.
Types of family units
Nuclear, extended, blended, childless, lone parent, cohabitation couples, gay and lesbian, adoptive, and foster families.

cohabitation couples and common law marriages-
consists of family arrangements that resemble other forms, but without a legalized marriage
blended
composed of parents who are divorced or separated(either through death or separation) and who have remained & formed a new family where kids from 1 or both 1st marriages & or from the remarriage
Role of parents, caregivers, and guardians
Leading, managing, providing loving care, making decisions based on values, providing communication, and teaching morality.
Pressures and social concerns for teenagers
Social pressures, pressure from peers and partners, body image, stress, bullying, mental health, and risk factors for suicide.

Pressure from peers: peers may pressure eachother to have sex. Pressure from partners: “everyone is doing it” “if you love me you will”
body image
a teens self-identity reflects how they view themselves and is influenced by many factors. Social media and TV shows influence body image.
stress
Teen stress is when a teen is under stress and pressure. The way that they respond to it is the actual issue, teen stress can cause eating disorders, depression, social/physical/emotional changes & even suicide.
Most teens stress experience
Most teens experience more stress when they perceive a situation as dangerous difficult, or painful and they do not have the resources to cope. Ex. exams.
What happens to a teen when they are stressed
When a teen is stressed things like increased heart rate, stomach aches, headaches, and chest pains.
bullying
behaviour directed at a specific person usually with someone they know, bullies may act alone or in groups.
The 4 types of bullying
Physical bulling, Verbal Bullying, cyber bullying and Relational Bullying
Physical bullying
: Putting hands on someone or blocking someone's way are some of the ways that physical bullies act. This type of bullying is most visible.
Verbal bullying
name-calling, insulting, constant teasing and threats are examples of verbal bullying.
Relational Bullying
: Convincing peers to exclude someone, or talking shit or bs about someone other forms of bullying that r least visible.
mental health
how you think, feel and act in your everyday life, influences how u handle stress and make decisions and relate to other ppl.
Child abuse
when a parent/caregiver whether through action or failing to act, causes injury, death, or serious harm to a child.
Sexual abuse
happens when a child is raped or forced to commit a sexual act. But its also any sort of sexual contact with a child.
Neglect
an action or inaction on the part of the caregiver that causes a child physical or emotional harm. Ex. withholding food.
Emotional abuse
can have a negative affect on a child’s emotional development, and sense of worth. Ignoring a child or withholding love, support, or guidance is considered emotional abuse.
mental illness
Psychological concerns
may become involved in substance abuse. Fall into a state of depression, may become violent/angry, may have an attitude-unable to handle stress.
Emotional concerns
Loss of connection with peers or family, withdraw from many events(school, family), show feelings of unhappiness.
risk factors for suicide
bullying behaviour emotional stress, and family conflict.
Abstinence
Choosing not to engage in sexual activity.
Interactions
Activities such as swimming lessons and painting that contribute to intellectual, social, and physical development.
Large and small motor skills
Examples include carrying toys, throwing a ball, making dots and scribbles, and putting small objects in their proper place.
Indicators of pregnancy
Morning sickness, fatigue, food cravings, and changes in the body.
Cesarean section
Surgical delivery of a baby through incisions in the mother's abdominal wall and uterus, done to prevent complications.
Preeclampsia
A high blood pressure disorder that can occur during pregnancy.
Fertility drugs
Medications used to treat infertility, but should be used under medical supervision.
Menstrual cycle
The 28-day cycle of hormonal changes in the female body, and how it can be used to pinpoint pregnancy.
Stages of labor
The different stages of the birthing process, including possible complications and scenarios.
Obstetrician
A doctor who specializes in delivering babies.
