Methodical Method
systematic, organized way of performing tasks, especially during the setup and execution of surgical procedures. This approach emphasizes efficiency, minimizes errors, and ensures patient safety
Aseptic Technique
Methods or practices in health care that reduce or prevent the spread of infection.
Evidence-Based Practice
Professional practices and their standards based on established scientific research rather than opinion or tradition.
Asepsis
The absence of pathogenic microorganisms on an animate surface or on body tissue.
Surgical Conscience
In surgery, the ethical motivation to immediately report surgical errors including contamination of the sterile field.
Laminar Air Flow
An unidirectional ultraclean air delivery system that creates a “curtain” of super clean air around the sterile field
OR Humidity
20%–60%
Surgical Attire
scrubs, head cover, gown, gloves, shoe cover, mask, protective eyewear
Containment and Confinement
A foundation concept of sterile technique in which sterile and nonsterile surfaces are separated by physical barriers or space.
Gowning and Gloving
Kick Bucket
A stainless steel bucket mounted in a frame on wheels used for soiled surgical sponges during the procedure.
Sterile and unsterile
?
Restricted
An area of the operating room with the most stringent methods to reduce the presence of infectious microorganisms in the environment.
Semi-Restricted
area of the operating room that has specific requirements for the use of surgical attire and access to other areas of the department.
Unrestricted
area of the operating room that is maintained at a high level of environmental cleanliness without restrictions on attire.
Open Gloving
used during sterile procedures that do not require a sterile gown, such as preoperative skin preparation of the patient, assisting in minor skin procedures, catheterization.
Closed Gloving
performed immediately after gowning. It is the most effective method for preventing contact between the skin and the outside of the sterile glove.
Package Integrity
the state in which the outside of a sterile package is intact, free from tears, holes, water marks, or other damage, and has external chemical indicators confirming it has been exposed to the sterilization process.
Envelope Style Wrap
Mayo Stand
small open-ended adjustable table used during surgery. Instruments and supplies to be required immediately are placed on.
Back Table
large stainless steel table on which most of the sterile surgical supplies and instruments are organized for use during surgery.
Ring Stand
stainless steel frame designed to hold sterile fluid basins during surgery.
Surgical helmet System (SHS)
developed to reduce the risk of surgical site infection in selected high-risk surgical procedures.
Gross Contamination
Contamination of a large area of tissue or the environment by an actual or potentially infective material.
Strikethrough Contamination
event in which fluid from a nonsterile surface penetrates the protective wrapper of a sterile item, causing it to become contaminated.
Radiopaque
substance that is impenetrable by x-rays
Neutral Zone
An area of the sterile field designated for the exchange of sharps.
