Recognition & Accreditation of the AT as a Allied Health Professional
June 1990 - American Medical Assoc. officially recognized athletic training as an allied health profession
Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation (CAHEA) - responsible for accrediting entry level athletic training programs
June 1994 - CAAHEP (commission on Accreditation of allied health education programs) until 2005
2006 - JRC-AT (Joint Review Committee on Athletic Training) changed to CAATE (Committee for Accreditation of Athletic Training Education)
Requirements for Certification as an Athletic Trainer
Certification Exam by BOC (2006 — became computerized)
9189 - BOC created; gives the exam and establishes continuing education requirements. Min of 80 CEUs every 3 years recertification. Pass = ATC credential
Candidate for Exam: complete accredited athletic training education program, proof of graduation, endorsement by CAATE accredited program director, proof of CPR cert.
State Regulation of Athletic Trainer
Licensure - limits athletic training to those who have met minimal requirements established by state board
state certification
registration - pay fee for being placed on existing list of practitioners
exemption - state realizes that athletic trainers perform functions similar to those of other licensed professions
