Sympathomimetic
Mechanism of action
It stimulates the alpha and beta adrenergic receptors, causing blood vessels to constrict, the heart to beat faster and stronger, and the airway to dilate. Therefore, improving blood pressure increases cardiac output and opens the airways.
Indications
Cardiac arrest, anaphylaxis, bronchospasm, bradycardia, croup, shock unresponsive to fluids
Contraindications
nil
Side effects
Hypertension, anxiety, tremors, palpations/tachyarrhythmias, dilated pupils
presentation:
1 mg/1 mL ampoule
Anaphylaxis
IM 500 mcg, repeated every 5 minutes, no maximum dose.
NEB dose anaphylaxis administered for upper airway obstruction that is refractory anaphylaxis to 3 x IM adrenaline.
NEB 5 mg single dose
Life-threatening bronchospasms or silent chest
500 mcg, repeat every 5 minutes no maximum dose
