Reticular Activating System
A network of neurons in the midbrain that mediates behavioral arousal and consciousness, controls the sleep-wake cycle, and alerts the cerebral cortex to sensory signals.
Substantia Nigra
A part of the midbrain that plays a role in reward seeking behaviors, drug addiction, and motor control through its connection to the basal ganglia.
Lesions in the Reticular Activating System
Can cause a comatose state due to its role in mediating consciousness.
Functions of the Reticular Activating System
Mediates behavioral arousal, controls the sleep-wake cycle, and processes incoming sensory signals.
Dopamine Producing Cells in the Substantia Nigra
Their degeneration contributes to motor symptoms such as slowed movement, tremors, and muscle rigidity in Parkinson's disease.
