Cephalic

An anatomical region referring to the head.

Frontal

An anatomical region referring to the forehead.

Orbital

An anatomical region referring to the eye.

Buccal

An anatomical region referring to the cheek.

Nasal

An anatomical region referring to the nose.

Oral

An anatomical region referring to the mouth.

Mental

An anatomical region referring to the chin.

Cranial

An anatomical region referring to the skull or head.

Occipital

An anatomical region referring to the back of the head.

Auricular

An anatomical region referring to the ear.

Cervical

An anatomical region referring to the neck.

Thoracic

An anatomical region referring to the chest area.

Axillary

An anatomical region referring to the armpit.

Mammary

An anatomical region referring to the breast area.

Pectoral

An anatomical region referring to the anterior chest area.

Sternal

An anatomical region referring to the breastbone area.

Transverse Plane

An anatomical plane dividing the body into upper (superior) and lower (inferior) portions.

Sagittal Plane

An anatomical plane dividing the body vertically into right and left portions.

Coronal / Frontal Plane

An anatomical plane dividing the body into front (anterior) and back (posterior) portions.

Oblique Plane

An anatomical plane passing through the body at an angle between horizontal and vertical planes.

Superior / Inferior

Directional terms indicating toward the upper part or head (Superior) versus toward the lower part or feet (Inferior).

Superficial / Deep

Directional terms indicating closer to the body surface (Superficial) versus farther inward from the surface (Deep).

Anterior / Posterior

Directional terms indicating toward the front of the body (Anterior) versus toward the back of the body (Posterior).

Dorsal / Ventral

Directional terms indicating toward the back side versus toward the belly side

Cranial / Caudal

Directional terms indicating toward the head (Cranial) versus toward the tail or lower portion (Caudal).

Proximal / Distal

Directional terms indicating closer to the point of attachment or trunk (Proximal) versus farther from the point of attachment or trunk (Distal).

Medial / Lateral

Directional terms indicating closer to the midline of the body (Medial) versus farther from the midline or toward the side (Lateral).
