Sergei Prokofiev
A Russian composer whose mother inspired him to go into composition. He studied with Rimsky-Korsakov. He believed music should challenge us to not understand on the first hearing, but not be too overly complex that we can’t understand at all.
Primitivism
An early 20th-century genre of music that rejected the “Western refinement” for more raw, elemental expression from smaller cultures; generally drawing from tribal elements. Considered problematic nowadays as it is seen as a form of exoticism and a way of looking down on music different from the Western tradition.
Maurice Ravel
A French composer who was often associated with Debussy as a founder of Impressionism. He studied with Faure and believed that music was deeply personal and sacred.
