Ge 1:1 Au commencement, Dieu créa le ciel et la terre.

Ge 1:1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

2 Or, la terre était chaotique et vide. Les ténèbres couvraient l’abîme, et l’Esprit de Dieu planait au-dessus des eaux.

2 Now the earth was chaotic and empty. Darkness covered the deep, and the Spirit of God hovered over the waters.

3 Et Dieu dit alors : Que la lumière soit !

3 Then God said: Let there be light!

Et la lumière fut.

And there was light.

4 Dieu vit que la lumière était bonne, et il sépara la lumière des ténèbres.

4 When God saw that the light was good, he separated the light from the darkness.

5 Il appela la lumière : « jour » et les ténèbres : « nuit ».

5 He called the light "day" and the darkness "night".

Il y eut un soir, il y eut un matin. Ce fut le premier jour.

There was evening and there was morning. That was the first day.

6 Puis Dieu dit : Qu’il y ait une étendue entre les eaux pour les séparer.

6 Then God said, "Let there be an expanse between the waters to separate them.

7 Dieu fit l’étendue. Il sépara les eaux qui étaient sous l’étendue des eaux qui étaient au-dessus. Et ce fut ainsi.

7 God made the expanse. He separated the waters under it from the waters above it. And so it was.

8 Dieu appela cette étendue : « ciel ». Il y eut un soir, il y eut un matin : ce fut le deuxième jour.

8 God called this expanse "heaven". There was evening and there was morning: that was the second day.

9 Puis Dieu dit : Que les eaux d’au-dessous du ciel se rassemblent en un seul endroit pour que la terre ferme paraisse.

9 Then God said, Let the waters under heaven be gathered together in one place, so that dry land may be seen.

Et ce fut ainsi.

And it was so.

10 Dieu appela « terre » la terre ferme, et « mer » l’amas des eaux. Dieu vit que c’était bon.

10 God called the dry land "earth" and the waters "sea". God saw that it was good.

11 Puis Dieu dit : Que la terre se couvre de verdure, de l’herbe portant sa semence, et de chaque espèce d’arbre produisant du fruit, portant chacun sa semence, partout sur la terre.

11 Then God said: Let the earth be covered with green plants, with grass bearing its seed, and with every kind of tree bearing fruit, each bearing its seed, all over the earth.

Et ce fut ainsi.

And it was so.

12 La terre fit germer de la verdure, chaque espèce d’herbe portant sa semence et chaque espèce d’arbre produisant du fruit, portant chacun sa semence. Dieu vit que c’était bon.

12 The earth brought forth vegetation, every kind of herb bearing its seed and every kind of tree producing fruit, each bearing its seed. And God saw that it was good.

13 Il y eut un soir, il y eut un matin : ce fut le troisième jour.

13 And there was evening and there was morning, the third day.

14 Puis Dieu dit : Que, dans l’étendue du ciel, il y ait des luminaires pour distinguer le jour de la nuit, et pour qu’ils marquent les saisons, les jours et les années.

14 Then God said, Let there be lights in the open space of heaven to mark the difference between day and night, and the seasons and the days and the years.

15 Que, dans l’étendue du ciel, ils servent de luminaires pour illuminer la terre.

15 Let them be lights in the heavens to give light on the earth.

Et ce fut ainsi.

And so it was.

16 Dieu fit deux grands luminaires, le plus grand pour qu’il préside au jour, et le plus petit pour qu’il préside à la nuit. Il fit aussi les étoiles.

16 God made two great lights, the greater to give light by day and the lesser to give light by night. He also made the stars.

17 Il les plaça dans l’étendue du ciel pour illuminer la terre,

17 He put them in the open spaces of heaven to give light on the earth,

18 pour présider au jour ainsi qu’à la nuit, et séparer la lumière des ténèbres. Dieu vit que c’était bon.

18 To rule over the day and the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good.

19 Il y eut un soir, il y eut un matin : ce fut le quatrième jour.

19 And there was evening and there was morning, the fourth day.

20 Puis Dieu dit : Que les eaux foisonnent d’une multitude d’êtres vivants, et que des oiseaux volent au-dessus de la terre dans l’étendue du ciel !

20 Then God said, Let the waters be full of all living things, and let birds fly over the earth in the open sky.

21 Alors Dieu créa chaque espèce de grands animaux marins et chaque espèce d’êtres vivants qui se meuvent et foisonnent dans les eaux, et chaque espèce d’oiseaux ailés. Dieu vit que c’était bon.

21 So God created every kind of great sea animal and every kind of living thing that moves and abounds in the waters, and every kind of winged bird. And God saw that it was good.

22 Et il les bénit, en ces termes : Soyez féconds, multipliez-vous, remplissez les eaux des mers, et que les oiseaux aussi se multiplient sur la terre.

22 And he gave them his blessing, saying, Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the waters of the seas, and let the birds also multiply on the earth.

23 Il y eut un soir, il y eut un matin : ce fut le cinquième jour.

23 And there was evening and there was morning, the fifth day.

24 Puis Dieu dit : Que la terre produise chaque espèce d’êtres vivants, chaque espèce de bestiaux, de reptiles et d’insectes, ainsi que d’animaux sauvages.

24 Then God said, Let the earth produce every sort of living thing, every sort of beast, creeping thing and insect and wild animal.

Et ce fut ainsi.

And so it was.

25 Dieu fit chaque espèce d’animaux sauvages, il fit chaque espèce de bestiaux, chaque espèce de reptiles et d’insectes. Dieu vit que c’était bon.

25 God made every kind of wild animal, every kind of cattle, every kind of creeping thing and insect. And God saw that it was good.

26 Puis Dieu dit : Faisons les hommes de sorte qu’ils soient notre image, qu’ils nous ressemblent. Qu’ils dominent sur les poissons de la mer, sur les oiseaux du ciel, sur les bestiaux sur toute la terre et sur tous les reptiles et les insectes.

26 Then God said, Let us make men in our image, so that they may be like us. Let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, over the cattle of all the earth, and over every creeping thing and insect.

27 Dieu créa les hommes de sorte qu’ils soient son image, oui, il les créa de sorte qu’ils soient l’image de Dieu. Il les créa homme et femme.

27 So God created man in his own image, yes, in the image of God. Male and female he created them.

28 Dieu les bénit en disant : Soyez féconds, multipliez-vous, remplissez la terre, rendez-vous en maîtres, et dominez les poissons des mers, les oiseaux du ciel et tous les reptiles et les insectes.

28 God gave them his blessing, saying: Be fruitful and multiply, and make the earth full, and be rulers over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and every creeping thing and insect.

29 Et Dieu dit : Voici, je vous donne, pour vous en nourrir, toute plante portant sa semence partout sur la terre, et tous les arbres fruitiers portant leur semence.

29 And God said, See, I have given you every seed-bearing plant in every part of the earth, and every fruit-tree bearing its seed, for food.

30 Je donne aussi à tout animal de la terre, aux oiseaux du ciel, à tout animal qui se meut à ras de terre, et à tout être vivant, toute plante verte pour qu’ils s’en nourrissent.

30 And to every beast of the earth, and to the birds of the air, and to every living thing that moves on the ground, and to every living thing, I give every green plant for food.

Et ce fut ainsi.

And so it was.

31 Dieu considéra tout ce qu’il avait créé : c’était très bon.

31 God looked at everything he had created and saw that it was very good.

Il y eut un soir, il y eut un matin : ce fut le sixième jour.

And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.

2:1 Ainsi furent achevés le ciel et la terre avec toute l’armée de ce qu’ils contiennent.

2:1 And the heaven and the earth were finished, and all the host of things in them.

2 Le septième jour, Dieu avait achevé tout ce qu’il avait créé. Alors il se reposa en ce jour-là de toutes les œuvres qu’il avait accomplies.

2 On the seventh day God had finished everything he had created. On that day he rested from all the work he had done.

3 Il bénit le septième jour, il en fit un jour saint, car, en ce jour-là, il se reposa de toute l’œuvre de création qu’il avait accomplie.

3 He blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on that day he took rest from all the work of creation which he had done.

4 Voici l’histoire de ce qui est advenu au ciel et sur la terre lorsqu’ils furent créés.

4 This is the story of what happened to heaven and earth when they were created.

Au temps où l’Eternel Dieu fit la terre et le ciel,

In the days when the Lord God made heaven and earth

5 il n’existait encore sur la terre aucun arbuste, et aucune herbe des champs n’avait encore germé, car l’Eternel Dieu n’avait pas fait pleuvoir sur la terre, et il n’y avait pas d’homme pour cultiver la terre.

5 There was still no shrub on the earth, and no herb of the field had come up; for the Lord God had not sent rain on the earth, and there was no man to make the earth fertile.

6 De l’eau se mit à sourdre et à irriguer toute la surface du sol.

6 Then water began to flow and water the whole surface of the earth.

7 L’Eternel Dieu façonna l’homme avec de la poussière du sol, il lui insuffla dans les narines le souffle de vie, et l’homme devint un être vivant.

7 The Lord God made man from the dust of the earth, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.

8 L’Eternel Dieu planta un jardin vers l’orient : l’Eden, le pays des Délices. Il y plaça l’homme qu’il avait façonné.

8 The Lord God planted a garden to the east: Eden, the land of delight. There he placed the man he had made.

9 L’Eternel Dieu fit pousser du sol toutes sortes d’arbres portant des fruits d’aspect agréable et délicieux, et il mit l’arbre de la vie au milieu du jardin. Il y plaça aussi l’arbre de la détermination du bien et du mal.

9 The Lord God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground, bearing fruit that was pleasing and delicious, and he put the tree of life in the middle of the garden. He also put there the tree for determining good and evil.

10 Du pays d’Eden sortait un fleuve qui arrosait le jardin. De là, il se divisait en quatre bras.

10 A river flowed out of the land of Eden and watered the garden. From there it divided into four branches.

11 Le nom du premier est Pishôn : il contourne tout le pays de Havila où se trouve de l’or,

11 The name of the first is Pishon: it flows round the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold,

12 un or d’excellente qualité. On trouve aussi dans cette contrée de l’ambre parfumée et la pierre précieuse appelée onyx.

12 Gold of the highest quality. There is also perfumed amber and the precious stone called onyx.

13 Le deuxième fleuve s’appelle Guihôn, il parcourt tout le pays de Koush.

13 The second river is called Gihon, which flows through all the land of Kush.

14 Le troisième fleuve s’appelle le Tigre, c’est celui qui coule à l’orient de l’Assyrie.

14 The third river is the Tigris, flowing eastwards from Assyria.

Et le quatrième fleuve c’est l’Euphrate.

And the fourth river is the Euphrates.

15 L’Eternel Dieu prit l’homme et l’établit dans le jardin d’Eden pour le cultiver et le garder.

15 Then the Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden, to be its farmer and its keeper.

16 Et l’Eternel Dieu ordonna à l’homme : Mange librement des fruits de tous les arbres du jardin,

16 And the Lord God gave the man orders: Take freely of the fruit of every tree in the garden,

17 sauf du fruit de l’arbre de la détermination du bien et du mal. De celui-là, n’en mange pas, car le jour où tu en mangeras, tu mourras.

17 Except the fruit of the tree of the decision of good and evil. Do not eat of that tree, for in the day you eat of it you will die.

18 L’Eternel Dieu dit : Il n’est pas bon que l’homme soit seul, je lui ferai une aide qui soit son vis-à-vis.

18 The Lord God said, It is not good for a man to be on his own; I will make him a helper to be his opposite number.

19 L’Eternel Dieu, qui avait façonné du sol tous les animaux des champs et tous les oiseaux du ciel, les fit venir vers l’homme pour voir comment il les nommerait, afin que tout être vivant porte le nom que l’homme lui donnerait.

19 So the Lord God, who had made every beast of the field and every bird of the air from the earth, made them come to the man to see what he would name them, so that every living thing might have the name which the man would give it.

20 L’homme donna donc un nom à tous les animaux domestiques, à tous les oiseaux du ciel et aux animaux sauvages. Mais il ne trouva pas d’aide qui soit son vis-à-vis.

20 So the man gave names to all the domestic animals, all the birds of the air and the wild animals. But he couldn't find any to help him.

21 Alors l’Eternel Dieu plongea l’homme dans un profond sommeil. Pendant que celui-ci dormait, il prit une de ses côtes et referma la chair à la place.

21 So the Lord God put the man into a deep sleep. While he was sleeping, he took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh in its place.

22 L’Eternel Dieu forma une femme de la côte qu’il avait prise de l’homme, et il l’amena à l’homme.

22 Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib which he had taken from the man, and took her to the man.

23 Alors l’homme s’écria :

23 Then the man said:

Voici bien cette fois

This is the woman

celle qui est

she who is

os de mes os,

bone of my bone,

chair de ma chair.

flesh of my flesh.

On la nommera « Femme »

She will be called "Woman

car elle a été prise

for she was taken

de l’homme.

from the man.

24 C’est pourquoi l’homme laissera son père et sa mère et s’attachera à sa femme, et les deux ne feront plus qu’un.

24 For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be attached to his wife, and the two will become one.

25 L’homme et sa femme étaient tous deux nus sans en éprouver aucune honte.

25 The man and his wife were both naked, and were not ashamed of it.

3:1 Le Serpent était le plus astucieux de tous les animaux des champs que l’Eternel Dieu avait faits. Il demanda à la femme : Vraiment, Dieu vous a dit : « Vous n’avez pas le droit de manger du fruit de tous les arbres du jardin ! » ?

3:1 Now the serpent was the cleverest of all the beasts of the field that the Lord God had made. He asked the woman, "Did God really say to you, 'You are not allowed to eat the fruit of every tree in the garden'?

2 La femme répondit au Serpent : Nous mangeons des fruits des arbres du jardin,

2 The woman said to the Serpent: We eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden,

3 mais celui qui est au milieu du jardin Dieu a dit de ne pas manger de son fruit et de ne pas y toucher sinon nous mourrons.

3 But the tree in the middle of the garden has been told by God not to eat of its fruit or touch it, or we will come to our death.

4 Alors le Serpent dit à la femme : Mais pas du tout ! Vous ne mourrez pas !

4 Then the Serpent said to the woman: Not at all! You will not die!

5 Seulement Dieu sait bien que le jour où vous en mangerez, vos yeux s’ouvriront et vous serez comme Dieu, décidant vous-mêmes ce qui est bien ou mal.

5 But God knows that the day you take it, your eyes will be open and you will be like God, deciding for yourselves what is right and what is wrong.

6 Alors la femme vit que le fruit de l’arbre était bon à manger, agréable aux yeux, et qu’il était précieux pour ouvrir l’intelligence. Elle prit donc de son fruit et en mangea. Elle en donna aussi à son mari qui était avec elle, et il en mangea.

6 Then the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and that it was good for opening the mind. So she took some of the fruit and ate it. And she gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.

7 Alors les yeux de tous deux s’ouvrirent et ils se rendirent compte qu’ils étaient nus. Ils se firent donc des pagnes en cousant ensemble des feuilles de figuier.

7 Then both their eyes were opened and they saw that they were naked. So they made themselves loincloths by sewing fig leaves together.

8 Au moment de la brise du soir, ils entendirent la voix de l’Eternel Dieu parcourant le jardin. Alors l’homme et sa femme se cachèrent de l’Eternel Dieu parmi les arbres du jardin.

8 At the time of the evening breeze, they heard the voice of the Lord God going through the garden. So the man and his wife hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden.

9 Mais l’Eternel Dieu appela l’homme et lui demanda : Où es-tu ?

9 But the Lord God called the man and asked him: Where are you?

10 Celui-ci répondit : J’ai entendu ta voix dans le jardin et j’ai eu peur, car je suis nu ; alors je me suis caché.

10 And he said, I heard your voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; so I hid myself.

11 Dieu dit : Qui t’a appris que tu es nu ? Aurais-tu mangé du fruit de l’arbre dont je t’avais défendu de manger ?

11 God said, "Who told you that you were naked? Did you eat of the fruit of the tree which I had forbidden you to eat?

12 Adam répondit : La femme que tu as placée auprès de moi, c’est elle qui m’en a donné, et j’en ai mangé.

12 Adam said in answer, The woman you gave me, she gave it to me, and I took it.

13 L’Eternel Dieu dit à la femme : Pourquoi as-tu fait cela ?

13 Then the Lord God said to the woman, Why have you done this?

– C’est le Serpent qui m’a trompée, répondit la femme, et j’en ai mangé.

• The woman said, "The snake tricked me, and I took it.

14 Alors l’Eternel Dieu dit au Serpent :

14 Then the Lord God said to the Serpent:

Puisque toi, tu as fait cela,

Since you have done this

tu es maudit | parmi tout le bétail

you are cursed among all the cattle

et tous les animaux sauvages :

and all the wild animals:

tu te traîneras sur le ventre,

you will drag yourself along on your belly,

tu mangeras de la poussière

you will eat dust

tout au long de ta vie.

all your life.

15 Je susciterai de l’hostilité | entre toi et la femme,

15 I will put enmity between you and the woman,

entre ta descendance | et sa descendance.

between your offspring and her offspring.

Celle-ci t’écrasera la tête,

She will crush your head,
