Where are the sulci/sacral bases located?

Medial and superior to the PSIS

Palpate down with the base of your hand (FINGERS FACING UP) till you get to the bony prominences on the booty cheeks

How do you determine the direction that the sacrum is rotating?

The sacrum will always rotate towards the posterior ILA

How do you determine the axis that the sacrum rotates on?

From the direction of the seated flexion test

What does a positive spring test mean?

The sacrum is not bouncy/springy, and the patient has either a backwards sacral torsion or an extension somatic dysfunction

What does a negative spring test mean?

The sacrum has normal bouncines/springiness, and the patient has either a forwards sacral torsion or a flexion somatic dysfunction

What must you ALWAYS do prior to performing a sacral HVLA technique?

Soft tissue

1. Seated flexion test

2. Locate the deep sacral sulci/base

3. Locate the posterior ILA

4. Perform a spring test

Backwards sacral dysfunctions are non-physiologic

What does bilateral sacral flexion mean?

Both sacral bases are anterior/deep

Both ILAs will be posterior/inferior

Spring test will be negative

Both sacral bases are posterior/shallow

Both ILAs will be anterior/superior

Spring test will be positive

This is non-physiologic

What does unilateral sacral flexion mean?

Sacral base/sulci is deep and ILA is posterior/inferior on the same side

Spring test will be negative

What does unilateral sacral extension mean?

Sacral base/sulci is shallow and ILA is anterior/superior on the same side
