“A game of polo with a headless goat”
Juxtoposing connotations between Polo, the sport and a headless goat. “polo” has connotations of wealth but on the other hand “headless goat” has connotations of something dangerous, reakless and uncultured. This shows the writer compares things with the western culture. (structure)

Triplet using aural imagery to emphesise chaos and the excitement of the locals. The onomatopoeia shows sudden contrast in sound because the start of the extract conveys silent and boredom , but when the vehicles were approaching there was a sudden increase in noise
“Voices were risen, fists were out and tempers rising”
Triplet to show that they are barbaric and uncivilised and things could get dangerous. She uses a judgemental tone as the writer compares them with what she considers to be normal, which is western culture.

Litote which breaks the accumulated tension, as everyone was expecting “Wacky Races” for humour to entertain the readers.

The noise and sense of danger is shown through zoomorphism as the vehicles are “roaring” and “revved”. This further increases the intensity of this event, creating the idea of chaos and excitement because it compares vehicles to wild animals

Creates a sense of danger by adding an element of chaos and unpredictability as the donkey looks close to running at 40km.
The text has a chronological structure
The text has a chronological structure, as though the events have some sense of order and control. This is ironic as the entire race seeks to be disorientated and chaotic.
The extract
The extract starts in media res as she reffers to the “lads” without any context or explination which adds a sense of excitement.
“Yaqoob loves it”
Short sentance juxtoposes the cultural prespective. Yaqoob loves whats happening while the writer finds it dangerous.

Idiom implies immaturity which foreshadows euphemism. Also shows how he became more excited about the race “Yaqoob loved it”
