Basic Speed Limit (Primary Highway)
Unless otherwise posted, the speed limit outside a city, town, or village on a primary highway is 100km/h.
Demerit Point Suspension (Fully Licensed)
A non-learner, non-probationary driver is suspended after accumulating 15 demerit points.
Backing a Passenger Vehicle (Left)
The driver should look over the left shoulder with occasional glances to the front.
Single Solid White Line
A line in an urban area between driving lanes indicating that lane changing is not permitted.
Parking Lane
The portion of a primary highway between the edge of the roadway to the right of traffic and the nearest solid white line.
Shoulder Checking
Glancing towards the blind spot in the direction the driver intends to move.
Traffic-lane Control Light (Red X)
Indicates that travel is not permitted in that specific lane.
Parental Consent Withdrawal
A parent can withdraw consent for a licensee under 18 years of age provided they are not self-supporting or married.
Over-driving Headlights
Travelling at a speed which does not permit the driver to see an object in time to stop at night.
Two-second Rule
A method used to judge a safe following distance that is accurate at any speed.
Passenger Restraint Responsibility
In Alberta, the driver must ensure all passengers under 16years of age are properly restrained.
Parallel Parking Curb Distance
The vehicle's wheels closest to the curb must be within a maximum distance of 50cm.
Probationary Class 5 Driver Term
The minimum amount of time a person must serve in this stage of the Graduated Driver Licensing program is 2years.
Collision Reporting Threshold
Drivers must report collisions to police if there are injuries, fatalities, or combined damage to property exceeding $1000.
Skid Recovery
A driver should steer in the direction they want the front of the vehicle to go.
Slow-moving Vehicle Sign
A sign displayed on the rear of any vehicle that normally travels at speeds less than 40km/h.
Weave Zone
An area on a highway where entrance and exit lanes are close together, requiring exiting vehicles to drive between accelerating entering vehicles.
Threshold Braking
In vehicles without anti-lock brakes, applying braking force to the point just before the wheels lock and easing off slightly if they do.
Braking to a Normal Stop
Apply brake pressure, ease off slightly just before the vehicle stops, then re-apply sufficient pressure to complete the stop.
Traffic Circle Entry
A driver entering a traffic circle must yield to vehicles already in the circle.
Deceleration Lane
A lane specifically for vehicles to reduce speed when exiting a highway.
Acceleration Lane
A lane in a merge area used by vehicles to adjust their speed to match highway traffic before entering.
Class 7 Driving Time Restriction
Learners with a Class 7 licence are not permitted to drive between Midnight and 5:00A.M.
School Zone Hours
Effective on school days from 8:00A.M. to 9:30A.M., 11:30A.M. to 1:30P.M., and 3:00P.M. to 4:30P.M.
Urban Scanning Distance
Drivers in urban areas should scan the road approximately 12 to 15seconds ahead.
Playground Zone Hours
These zones are in effect from 8:30A.M. to 1hour after sunset.
Stop Sign Parking Distance
A driver cannot legally park within 5metres of a Stop sign.
Headlight Dimming (Following)
Headlights must be dimmed at a minimum distance of 150metres when approaching another vehicle from behind.
Speed Limit Signs
Indicate the maximum speed permitted when conditions are favourable.
Nighttime Definition
The period beginning 1hour after sunset and ending 1hour before the following sunrise.
Railway Crossing Stop Distance
Stop at least 5metres from the nearest rail when lights and bells are activated.
Angle Parking Curb Distance
The vehicle's front wheel must be within a maximum of 50cm from the nearest curb.
Steady Yellow Traffic Light
Indicates a driver must stop before the intersection unless the stop cannot be made in safety.
School Zone Speed Limit (Rural)
Unless otherwise posted, the maximum speed is 30km/h at 9:00A.M. on a school day.
Fire Hydrant Parking Distance
Vehicles must be parked at least 5metres away from a fire hydrant.
