uses the hierarchy of needs, ideas such as congruence and an individuals value of self worth to explain behaviour

Rogers claims we have 2 basic needs:

positive regard from others

feelin of self worth

the closer our ideal self and self consept are to eachother, the greater our feeling of self worth

self-actualisation

Rogers - drive to realise ones true potential

Hierarchy of needs

stages that Maslow said will achieve self actualisation in workers to work at their most optimum level. must achieve each stage to progress to the next.

* Aesthetic needs (confidence, respect)
* Cognitive needs (problem solving)
* Self esteem (employment, achievement)
* Love and belonging (family, friends)
* Safety needs (shelter, health)
* Physiological needs (sleep, food)

(in)congruence

how close your ideal self is to your real self. if they are very similar you are congruent. if not then you’re incongruent

condiditons of worth

Rogers believed people hinder others’ process of self actualisation. if an individual receives conditional positive regard, they will develop conditions of worth as they believe they will only be resected if they meet that condition.

influence of councelling

Rogers believed peoples psychological needs were a direct result of their conditions of worth.

counselling would allow people to solve their own problems in constructive ways as therapists are able to provide a constructive and supportive environment to help dissolve clients conditions of worth.

Research shown that those who believe in conditions of worth developed a false sense of self that result in depression.

AO3: real life application

direct link between economic development and hierarchy of needs. workers who are more self actualized work better.

AO3: unrealistic approach

operates in an idealistic world. doesn't consider that some people are pessimistic and self-destructive.

AO3: cultural differences

order of hierarchy of needs may be different to each culture. self actualization for some may not be personal but based on a contribution to other peoples lives.
